12k GF Deep Freeze Kalichrome were specialty expedition sunglasses and extraordinarily rare, only produced
in the early years of Operation Deep Freeze when the U.S. Navy undertook exploration in Antarctica.
The double
gradient mirrored lenses were designed to reflect glare in even the most extreme conditions of ice and glacial surroundings, and the gold mirror Kalichrome coating on the rear of the lens added even more UVA and UVB eye protection and also served to reflect the heat from the eye and face. Also note
the rubber covers on the ear stems of the Deep Freeze, designed to
prevent the metal frame from sticking to exposed skin in extreme cold
conditions. These Ray-Ban Deep Freeze Kalichrome sunglasses also feature the
top pearlized "General" bar that provides extra design flair and improved balance on the face, and the
58mm double gradient density B&L mirrored mineral glass lenses measure approximately 2.25" x 1.875"
at the widest points.
The top of the nose bridge is impressed B&L Ray-Ban USA and the bottom of the bridge is impressed B&L
1/10 12k GF. The unisex Ray-Ban 12k GF Deep Freeze Kalichrome frame measures approximately 5.5" temple to temple, and they will come in the original Bausch & Lomb Deep Freeze case passed down in the family of one of the original researchers participating in the Deep Freeze Expedition c 1958. Very rare.
