Vintage Jean Paul Gaultier 56-0174 sunglasses c 1991 are one of the most recognizable of all extraordinary JPG designs, an icon of rap and hip hop music and worn by Tupac Shakur (2Pac), Ethan Hawke, 2Chainz, A$AP Rocky, Samuel L. Jackson and other celebrities over the years. The extremely rare 56-0174 is probably the most iconic frame ever produced by Jean Paul Gaultier, and the front features a unique bolt-and-screw double bridge mounted on two triangles. The craftsmanship on the temples is truly state-of-the-art, and the length can be modified with a one of a kind triple bar construction. You can adjust them by turning the screw mechanism on the middle bar. Jean Paul Gaultier was at the avant-garde of eyewear design in the 1980's, and although Japan was an expensive place to make eyewear Gaultier did not want to settle with anything less than the best craftsmanship for his sunglasses. Unlike most other designers, he did not license his brand to a big eyewear manufacturer but instead maintained supervision of the design and production by Murai Japan. The unisex JPG 56-0174 frame measures approximately 5.375" temple to temple, and the original blue lenses measure approximately 2.0" x 1.75" at the widest points. The inside of one stem is marked Frame Made in Japan while the inside of the other stem is marked UV Protection 56-0174 Jean Paul Gaultier.
