Maui Jim R and D Hawaii Double Gradient Mirror Aviator Sunglasses
1 Vintage Maui Jim R and D Hawaii sunglasses are the very early Maui Jim interpretation of classic aviator sunglasses, here with a rich orange tortoise shell nylon frame with cool black highlights and very rare Maui Jim double gradient mirror lenses back when their lenses were mineral glass as were also found in Vuarnets and Revos from this period of the 1980s and early 1990s. So early they lacked a specific name, collectors and Maui Jim aficionados began referring to them as the Sunglass R and D Hawaii because some production had this marked on one of the inside ear stems. The unisex Maui Jim frame measures approximately 5.5" temple to temple, and the lenses measure approximately 2.25" x 2.0" at the widest points. You'll find the Maui Jim logo embossed on the exterior of both ear stems, and the inside of one stem is marked Nylon Made in France.

2 Vintage Maui Jim R and D Hawaii tortoise shell sunglasses are identical in size, shape, and appearance with #1 above but here the nylon frame is a pure tortoise shell without the orange and black variation of #1. It's all a matter of personal preference, for both date to the earliest days of Maui Jim sunglasses production. You'll find the Maui Jim logo embossed on the exterior of both ear stems, and the inside of one stem is marked either Frame France while on some production the inside of the other stem is marked Sunglass R and D Hawaii.
