Amerian Optical 12k GF Ful Vue AN 6531 Sunglasses
1 Vintage Amerian Optical 12k GF Ful Vue sunglasses are a very rare gold plated variation of the iconic AN 6531 military aviator of the 1940s, but here you get a 12k gold filled frame with beautiful and elaborate etching that differentiates American Optical AN 6531 Outdoorsman aviator sunglasses from the nickel plated Bausch & Lomb AN6531 Outdoorsman sunglasses. AO gold plated 12k GF Ful Vue AN6531 sunglasses with bakelite brow bar were made in very small quantities, and thus they're a real rarity today. Originating in the mid 1930s, the "teardrop" shape lens of the AN6531 was designed to accommodate Air Force pilots who were constantly looking down at their instrument panel while in flight, and of course all future aviators are recognized by this lens shape. The unisex American Optical AN6531 12k GF Ful Vue frame measures approximately 5.375" temple to temple, and the AO mineral glass lenses measure approximately 2.25" x 1.875" at the widest points. The bottom of the nose bridge is impressed Ful Vue AO 1/10 12k GF, an early gold plated version of the iconic and original AN6531 aviator from which all future Ray-Ban aviator and Outdoorsman sunglasses evolved and continue to this day.

2 While most vintage AN6531 Ful Vue aviators for World War II military were made by either Bausch & Lomb or Amerian Optical, identical AN 6531's were also sourced from a few other eyewear makers like Rochester Optical which were largely unmarked and produced in small numbers such that they are very difficult to find today and highly sought after by vintage eyewear and militaria collectors. These makers primarily served the Air Force and used a copper core frame rather than magnetic steel and the plating is nickel instead of 12K gold; you never wanted to take something magnetic into the cockpit of an aircraft for fear of the affect on your compass navigation system. This frame was lighter weight than gold plated versions. This rare example is in very near mint condition and comes in the original leather case. A real collector example of the style.
