American Optical Round Leather Steampunk Goggles
Vintage American Optical round steampunk safety goggles c 1930s - 1940s feature large round green mineral glass lenses along with leather nose guard and secure shooter ear stems, a rare treasure from this early period of quality sunglasses and goggle production. During these years American Optical and Bausch & Lomb often worked together, even sharing frames and lenses to mix and match as both companies struggled to maintain production in the years leading up to World War II. The frame has small metal cups on the inside that provide added protection from the sides, and they can be worn with or without the removable center leather nose guard. The unisex AO frame measures approximately 5.675" temple to temple, and the lenses measure approximately 1.875" in diameter with both laser etched at the top center to indicate the AO light green glass used here, analogous to B&L RB-3 lenses. The back of the nose bar is impressed AO 0076 in the metal, part of a great collection of rare early eyewear from the 1930s - 1950s. Rare.
