Vintage B&L Ray-Ban "The General" 50th anniversary edition Changeables sunglasses are an icon of modern sunglasses design, featuring a 24k gold plated Arista frame, "The General" brow bar, and Bausch & Lomb Changeables photochromatic lenses. Ray-Ban Changeables lenses darken to 75% of their full capacity within the first minute of exposure to sunlight. Out of sunlight, they lighten half way within the first 10 minutes and about 75% within the first 90 minutes. These "adaptive" properties allow them to optimize the glare protection and visual acuity for a wide variety of light conditions, and it's a property that is infused into the glass lenses and is not a coating that will wear out or wear off. The General sunglasses were made famous by General Douglas MacArthur, who was photographed wearing them during his triumphant return to liberate the Phillipines toward the end of World War II. The brow bar from which the style takes its name was designed to improve the balance of the sunglasses on the face, providing a more stable and secure fit. The 50th Anniverwary General frame measures approximately 5.5" temple to temple, and the 58mm Changeables lenses measure approximately 2.25" x 1.875" at the widest points with right lens laser etched Ray-Ban and both lenses laser etched BL near the hinges. You'll find the Ray-Ban logo etched on the exterior of both ear stems, and the inside of one stem is impressed The General while the inside of the other stem is impressed 1937 - 1987. The top of the nose bridge is impressed B&L Ray-Ban USA while the bottom of the bridge is impressed B&L Ray-Ban 58 [] 14. Rare.
