Dennis Burns founded Gargoyles in 1979 and is best known for the invention of Toric lens technology which made the iconic Gargoyles Legends wrap designs possible from an optical standpoint. He knew that flat sunglasses that went straight across the face temple to temple left the sides of the eyes more exposed to wind and glare. Conversely, curved lenses of the time caused visual distortion and eye stress. Burns' state-of-the-art innovation that preserved outstanding optics in a dramatically curved lens shape set the stage for "wrap" sunglasses styles including the iconic Oakley X Metal designs like the Juliet, Penny, Mars, and XX. But for Burns it became the basis of Gargoyles Performance Eyewear and the original Gargoyles Legends and Legends II sunglasses which remain enduringly popular today. Although modern reproductions of these styles are made along with plenty of counterfeits, there is no equal to the original Gargoyles lenses of the 1990s, technology so good it was used by the U.S. Army for ballistic protection.
